Charco La Oscura: the La Araña pool between San Rafael and Guatapé

The name is misleading. La Oscura is a green and blue pool with a visible bottom in several spots, ringed by big rocks that shade it. That is why it looks dark from afar.

Where it is

In the La Araña (or Las Arañas) sector, on the road between Guatapé and San Rafael, on the border of the two municipalities. The Guatapé hydroelectric plant is right there. Oriente Antioqueño says the walk follows the old Camino de Islitas, once used by mule drivers, between 1,340 and 1,100 meters of altitude.

How to get there

Infobae summed it up in September 2026: from Medellín take the Guatapé road and continue toward San Rafael; the landmark is the hydro plant, where you turn right and pass a gate, telling the guard you are going to the pool. By bus, take the San Rafael bus from the North Terminal and continue by motorbike taxi from town.

The gate rules can change. If they do not let you through, do not look for another way across private land.

Other pools in the sector

On the same route are Mina Vieja, in the Cirpes sector, and La Olleta, in the Samaria sector. The corridor has creeks and trails that stretch the visit, and searches for "charco la araña san rafael" usually mean this group.

Where to sleep nearby

On the Guatapé road side there are places to stay several kilometers from town, such as La Perla Negra Eco-Lodge, 7 km from town according to its listing. The El Bizcocho area is also on the way. If you travel without a car, check getting there from Medellín first.

To see the other pools in the municipality, go back to San Rafael river pools.
